I didn't even know you could harden leather that much. I'm very impressed with how strong it is, it's like having a steel hilt almost. My only minor criticism is more of a personal/discipline specific issue, because I mainly practice Italian sabre and I understand these are meant for practicing English systems, but the back end of the basket does dig into the wrist on extension, making certain cuts difficult. Something that can probably easily be compensated for, but I am used to mainly steel sabre so for avid singlestick fencers this probably isn't even an issue.
