Shortsword Trainer, Oakshott Type XIV

Modeled after the Oakshott Type XIV, this is designed to be an inexpensive trainer with incredible strength.

The blade is stiffer than our Pentti line; it will not flex much due to the difference in plastic, but it makes a good general trainer.

I lovw how this trainer handles.  I've been getting deep into the i.33 manual and this sword feels so much more natural than the standard arming swords I've used up to this point.  One one slight gripe is that the oversized pommel for the weight/balance will smack your forearm during certain manipulations, but overall a wonderful trainer.

5 of 5 not really zero maintenance, but otherwise alright March 17, 2019

The  balancing pommel washers do rust, so it does need a little maintenance. The face of the washer that faces the plastic has a slight edge, unlike the outer face each has smoother edges. The plastic isn't exactly a smooth finish, the slots/fuller especially. It arrived with a slight bend but nothing major. Hilt wrap was nice and even. I am not familiar with I.33, our group does sidesword and longsword, but the balance feels nice. Quillon is an inch thick, 8" long and the top center of the hilt(where the cord loops through a hole) is 2-7/8" from the corner of the blade and quillon, if that matters to anyone that prefers to wrap a finger over the quillon. Blade was 29" inches, with crossguard makes 30". POB is same as above, from bottom of crossguard. Hilt is 4-1/4" long from top of washer/pommel to bottom of crossguard and 3/4" thick and 1-1/2" wide. Pommel/washers are 2-3/4". Synth part is 1/2" thick throughout. Bought it cause is was cheaper than steel and the alternate synths.

As far as I know, this is one of two synthetic wasters on the market specifically patterned after the Oakeshott type XIV, and is by far the less expensive model. The blade profile and weighted pommel scales result in a surprisingly nimble weapon that flows through cuts and wards with ease, and the paracord hilt wrap is quite comfortable.
I will note the version of this sword I received does not have the triple fuller-like slots in the forte, though it doesn't seem to have suffered for their exclusion. The balance point is still fairly close to the cross, though not so much that it feels like it lacks authority in the cut. Paired up with, say, a Cold Steel buckler, and you've got yourself a nice introductory tool for i.33 techniques.
These seem to run about as much as the Rawlings synthetics, so you may need to weigh the advantages of having a better dedicated piece vs. the Rawlings' modular nature.
