Features
Light fencing jacket based on the popular "AP" 350N model. Besides the features like an overlap in the front, bladecatcher, hard form protection, the "AP Light" is characterized by low weight, breathable construction, adjustable waist and extra pockets with foams. What is more, this jacket is thinner than the regular "AP" but still made from 350N puncture resistance fabric. Its lining allows heat and moisture removal and has the antibacterial function.

On sleeves you can find pockets for additional elbow protectors, e.g. "Shell" (link). Thanks to extra pockets for the foam, you can modify ribs, shoulders, and front. This feature allows using this jacket in light historical fencing training, as well as tournaments.

#1. Does the AP Light Jacket offer adequate protection for the full range of HEMA styles from longsword to rapier? I know it offers less then the regular style but I'm just curious how scaled down that protection is in comparison.
PHA> If you are doing ALL HEMA, its a good choice. Its less impact resistant than the AP, but more than the officer. Range of motion is also somewhat in-between.

#2. Is the light variant made from the same material as the regular SPES jacket? If not, what material?
PHA> It has more synthetic materials, including a open cell foam that is fairly breathable.

#3. Lastly, how significant is it in terms of the reduction of heat compared to the regular style?
PHA> Significant. Because of the open foam, mostly in the back.

Ultimately, I want a jacket that still is protective for all styles of HEMA combat but does not overheat excessively, as I will be practicing outside as well. Of the two, the SPES Axel Jacket V2.0 or the SPES AP Light 350N, which would you recommend?
PHA> The light for sure. You may get a few more bruises, but you will be cooler and have better motion.

New policy: we are imposing a $25 restocking fee on any return, exchange OR change in the open order for any special color (not black) on any SPES jacket or pants.
So please review your orders carefully and be sure you leave yourself time for your order to arrive if you want custom work, usually 4 weeks. I try to have black jackets and pants in stock at all times!

I got the custom sizing. Due to COVID, it took a lot longer than they thought, but it was definitely worth the wait. The jacket fits me like a glove.

5 of 5 I love this jacket August 20, 2021

I fence outdoors in Florida and my regular AP jacket was killing me. I tried this jacket and I'm upset that I didn't buy this earlier on. Movement is way better. There is less protection, so you have to make a decision based on that. It's so much cooler. I jsut competed in this jacket last week and it felt awesome. It kept me cool and the hits that I took on the arm were absorbed by the plastic arm protectors. I do longsword and I can't imagine going back to a heavier jacket. I will say this though. If you wear this jacket, don't skimp on the forearm protection or the chest protection. This is a thinner, less padded jacket. If you are the guy that takes a lot of body hits (I usu don't), then that's something to consider.

5 of 5 Ideal jacket January 13, 2021
Reviewer: Matt O from Stow, OH United States
My custom size came pretty close to perfect. The jacket itself is the bare minimum protection for longsword. Light pads on the ribs, shoulder and a vertical strip down the front. No forearm pads but most people use hard forearms anyway so I think it’s a plus that this has less bulk there. It’s also a lot less hot than my last jacket. If you’re ok with sacrificing pads for maneuverability I think this is a great jacket.

The jacket is relatively lightweight and appears to be well made.  Shipping was much quicker than the 6-8 weeks listed, which was a big bonus (though the jacket was black, so possibly already in stock).  My HEMA loving son was very excited to receive it as a gift.
