Synthetic Viking Sword:  We created the guard hardware for a Massachusetts group that came to us looking for something to go along with some Viking wasters I created for them a number of years ago.  Its attached similar to the shortsword hardware, but custom crafted out of black plastic.  The pommel has a classic slightly curved lobed shape from about the 10th century.  The guard is oval shaped of similar period.  The hardware fits on a custom modified Rawlings synthetic plastic blade.

The Type II Viking Sword features hickory hardwood hardware with engraved images on the guard and pommel.  These are authentic 10th century symbols found on  Viking artifacts. Actual engravings may vary from the picture above and we try out new patterns. We also include a tan grip.

Protective gear is required to use the weapon.  Consult your instructor or safety official before using this weapon. Use at your own risk.

What is the main difference between the synthetic and wood, in terms of intended use? Which has better/worse handling characteristics (when compared to steel), ‘feel’ (e.g. on impact or in the bind), etc.?

Certainly knights, legionnaires, samurai and everyone in-between have been using wood for over 2000 years.  So it clearly is an excellent choice in martial training for most people and has trained more people for battle than any other system.  We came out with the synthetic line exclusively for for people who train with a bit more blade contact and repetitive contact drills than others.  The synthetics also do absorb some of the blade contact similar to steel.  Both in flex and material characteristics and reportedly binding is better than the wood. Since the wood may bounce the blades a bit more.
