What is the main difference
between the synthetic and wood, in terms of intended use?
Which has better/worse handling characteristics (when
compared to steel), ‘feel’ (e.g. on impact or in the bind),
etc.?
Certainly knights,
legionnaires, samurai and everyone in-between have been
using wood for over 2000 years. So it clearly is an
excellent choice in martial training for most people and has
trained more people for battle than any other system.
We came out with the synthetic line exclusively for for
people who train with a bit more blade contact and
repetitive contact drills than others. The synthetics
also do absorb some of the blade contact similar to steel.
Both in flex and material characteristics and reportedly
binding is better than the wood. Since the wood may bounce
the blades a bit more.
What is the difference in durability?
The synthetic requires minimal
maintenance. While we have wasters over 10 years old
with zero maintenance done to them, I think the synthetics
are more resistant to neglect.
