Purpleheart Armoury Synthetic Longsword Type III, the Pentti+ :  We are now introducing our next in line for our synthetic series of swords.  We designed the Pentti+ longsword to to be high performance tournament equipment with the safety and balance of a training sword.  Based on the European designed Pentti swords used originally by the GHFS in Sweden, we were asked to duplicate the best heavy contact sparring longsword after the original designer retired from the sword trade.  It was our pleasure to work closely with GHFS and Scott Brown to source the proper materials to make what our customers requested.   Protective gear is absolutely required to use the weapon especially gloves.  Consult your instructor or safety official before using this weapon. Use at your own risk.

Some of the exclusive enhancements to this product include:

  • Stainless Steel custom designed scent stopper pommel pulls the POB 2" from the guard.

  • Tool Steel guard.

  • Strong quality grip.

  • The changes made:

-Type 3 has a different plastic.  Very tough stuff.
    - Type 3 has a good taper.
    - Type 3 flexes more on the thrust.
    -
Type 3 flex is more towards the point, less towards the center of the blade due to how we tapered the blade.
    - Type 3 is a bit lighter in weight.
    - Type 2 does not flex much, but if it does it doesn't rebound as well. Type 3 rebounds very well.
    - Type 3 is more expensive to produce. (for the above reasons)
    - Type 3 is white/cream/hint of yellow.  I may do black, but unlikely any other color.
-Type 3 is based on a sword that Scott Brown required for tournament fighting. Flex, weight and balance being considered and extensively tested.
-Type 2 is a good waster substitute if you are Ok with plastic. Good price, good for training and some light sparring, good plastic, strong.  The weight and balance is right in the middle of most historic swords.
-Type 3 is a bit more performance/tournament focused and high levels of contact during training. Its weight is on the lighter end of most historic swords.

What is the main difference between the synthetic and wood, in terms of intended use? Which has better/worse handling characteristics (when compared to steel), ‘feel’ (e.g. on impact or in the bind), etc.?

Certainly knights, legionnaires, samurai and everyone in-between have been using wood for over 2000 years.  So it clearly is an excellent choice in martial training for most people and has trained more people for battle than any other system.  We came out with the synthetic line exclusively for for people who train with a bit more blade contact and repetitive contact drills than others.  The synthetics also do absorb some of the blade contact similar to steel.  Both in flex and material characteristics and reportedly binding is better than the wood. Since the wood may bounce the blades a bit more.

What is the difference in durability?

The synthetic requires minimal maintenance.  While we have wasters over 10 years old with zero maintenance done to them, I think the synthetics are more resistant to neglect.
