Light fencing jacket based on the popular "AP" 350N model. Besides the features like an overlap in the front, bladecatcher, hard form protection, the "AP Light" is characterized by low weight, breathable construction, adjustable waist and extra pockets with foams. What is more, this jacket is thinner than the regular "AP" but still made from 350N puncture resistance fabric. Its lining allows heat and moisture removal and has the antibacterial function.

On sleeves you can find pockets for additional elbow protectors, e.g. "Shell" (link). Thanks to extra pockets for the foam, you can modify ribs, shoulders, and front. This feature allows using this jacket in light historical fencing training, as well as tournaments.

#1. Does the AP Light Jacket offer adequate protection for the full range of HEMA styles from longsword to rapier? I know it offers less then the regular style but I'm just curious how scaled down that protection is in comparison.
PHA> If you are doing ALL HEMA, its a good choice. Its less impact resistant than the AP, but more than the officer. Range of motion is also somewhat in-between.

#2. Is the light variant made from the same material as the regular SPES jacket? If not, what material?
PHA> It has more synthetic materials, including a open cell foam that is fairly breathable.

#3. Lastly, how significant is it in terms of the reduction of heat compared to the regular style?
PHA> Significant. Because of the open foam, mostly in the back.

Ultimately, I want a jacket that still is protective for all styles of HEMA combat but does not overheat excessively, as I will be practicing outside as well. Of the two, the SPES Axel Jacket V2.0 or the SPES AP Light 350N, which would you recommend?
PHA> The light for sure. You may get a few more bruises, but you will be cooler and have better motion.

New policy: we are imposing a $25 restocking fee on any return, exchange OR change in the open order for any special color (not black) on any SPES jacket or pants.
So please review your orders carefully and be sure you leave yourself time for your order to arrive if you want custom work, usually 4 weeks. I try to have black jackets and pants in stock at all times!

Great jacket October 15, 2018

After considerable research I chose this jacket over the AP heavy and after trying on a heavy I’m very happy w that decision. The foam insert padding is perfectly located to offer reliable protection without hindering range of movement. The cut and fit of the jacket is spectacular and the protection to the shoulders is perfect once the foam incerts are removed (with them in movement is a bit more limited and you look like your wearing a foam muscle shirt).

SPES AP Jacket Light September 13, 2018
Reviewer: Adrian Gunn from Boston Armizare, United States
So far, so good. Very light and comfortable, with much more freedom of movement than my SPES Hussar. Protection is about as light as you can for long sword, though the padding along the zip covering the sternum and the shoulder padding is quite good. There is sufficicent space in the pad pockets to "double up" the padding. I took the removable pads from my SPES Hussar which were almost identical to the removable pads for this jacket, trimmed them slightly and doubled up my shoulders and the center pad along the zip with no significant reduction in mobility. Nice Jacket!

By far, the best jacket SPES makes. September 6, 2018

I own a SPES AP, and a SPES Hussar, as well as the AP Light, and I'll never wear the AP or the Hussar again.  Both are fine jackets, but in comparison to the AP Light they are inferior.  The AP light has enough padding to protect against all of the hardest blows, but is still light enough to limit the restriction of movement.  It's breathable, and washable, and doesn't take a herculean to get it dry after washing it.
