Many people upon watching this will be shocked and flabbergasted.  But there is a reason for this experiment.  The sword in this video was made to prove a point that swordsmiths were the aerospace engineers of their time.  For the last 3000 years of steel research and experimentation they have been creating swords by pushing limits of material and design.  Swords were not delicate thin pieces of metal nor brute bars of steel, but highly crafted weapons of war that served its user in their greatest time of need.

Dan Maragni of Ashi Forge created this 12th century sword, it is neither forged nor folded, just a piece of modern steel properly ground and heat treated to his exact specifications.  The blade design was even made commercially by stock removal. No folding and no forging was involved.   The only thing he did to it in his shop was to make a hilt and sharpen it.  The cutting edge is shaped as a sword should be and not as an axe.  The balance and weight are within historical dimensions.

And then Mr. Maragni asked that we try to break it. And try we did. This sword has cut plate armour, maille, and now here Todd Sullivan cuts a 4"x4" wooden pell and some tree limbs in the area.  Yet it did not crack, bend, break or fold..

No doubt a unique experiment, this is no different than crashing a $60k car into a concrete barrier to see if the seat belts work.    Truly a marvel in engineering.
